Portlock Alaska Project

There is now less than two days left before @therookiesco 'Monthly Art Challenge: The Streets' closes, and I've been busy today working on this hero asset of a totem pole for the scene. This project is based on a street from the abandoned ghost town in Alaska called Portlock. The town is named after the Brit fur trader Nathaniel Portlock. In the past the location was a thriving salmon cannery, and Portlock is also known as Port Chatham.

In the '80s the town of Portlock was settled again, which was the fourth attempt, but by 1990 the town was abandoned again. The various indigenous people's close to the area, such as the Dene and the Alutiiq, have legends which speak of two types of mysterious beings living in the region, one type called the Nantinaq, and the other known as the Kushtaka.

The totem pole serves as a territorial warning in the locale to stay out. I've taken artistic license with the totem pole design, although I did reference traditional totem poles from the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. These renders were created with Substance Painter.
